Can We Afford to Eat Healthier?
Diets have changed significantly in the past 100 years, particularly in developed countries. Increased calorie consumption and the widespread use of processed foods mean that a large percentage of the population has diets that are not very similar to those of their ancestors (whose diets were primarily made up of grains, vegetables, and some form of natural protein). Modern food production methods have provided many benefits, such as reducing hunger and making food more widely available. However, they have also contributed to rising rates of obesity and heart disease globally.
Scientists argue that in order for our bodies to operate correctly, we must ingest a wide array of nutrients (particularly vitamins, minerals, protein) so our cells can repair themselves. Too much sugar and fat can lead to damage to these cells. Researchers perceive the imbalance of nutrients as a principal reason for the growing incidence of chronic diseases in today’s society. At present, there seems to be a threshold for how much our bodies can handle before we become ill.
Some new tactics have been proposed to help produce healthier outcomes. Examples of these techniques include developing plant-based meat alternatives, which still provide protein but do not contain any harmful fat. Additionally, genetic engineering of crops to increase their nutrient density is being studied. Some commentators have provided even more radical examples, such as “lab-grown” foods that would provide complete nutrition to all demographic groups.
Many consumers in the U.S. spend billions of dollars on dietary supplements every year in hopes of improving their health. Most doctors and experts agree that these companies profit from the sale of supplements while consumers see little, if any, positive results. They recommend instead a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, healthy foods, and avoiding unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
People often go to great lengths to improve their health, but the pursuit of “perfect nutrition” raises ethical and social questions. Already, healthcare systems in wealthier countries are under strain from lifestyle-related diseases. If richer nations continue to consume more resources to maintain their diets, poorer countries will face worsening food shortages. In a world struggling with inequality and climate change, the priority should be solving these global issues rather than chasing expensive dietary perfection.
Question 21.
According to paragraph 1, all of these are true about modern diets, EXCEPT?

Questions 10–13. Read the article about winter driving.
Are sentences 10–13 ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’? If there is not enough information, choose ‘Doesn’t say’.
Winter driving is risky for drivers due to the unpredictability of weather conditions, which increases the likelihood of accidents. Visibility can change quickly, as fog may suddenly appear at the top of a hill.
The first rule for driving on icy roads is to move smoothly and carefully. Sudden movements can cause a car to lose control. For this reason, drivers should turn the steering wheel and increase speed slowly and gently. Therefore, whenever you steer or speed up, you should do it slowly and gently. Imagine you have a full cup of hot coffee beside you and drive carefully enough so that it does not spill.
The second rule is to stay focused while driving. The more ice there is on the road, the further ahead drivers should look. Gently using the brakes can help drivers control how long it takes to stop. It is also important to remember that drivers may be moving faster than they think.
In general, drivers should leave more space to stop: twice the normal distance on wet roads, three times the distance on snowy roads, and even more distance on icy roads. By keeping control of the vehicle at all times, drivers can reduce the risk of accidents.

Some clubs focus on a specific type of music, such as pop, rock, or classical, while others allow members to explore different styles. Recycling is the process of turning waste materials into new items. This helps save natural resources and reduces pollution. By recycling, we can reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills and lessen the amount of new materials we need to make products. People have been talking about recycling for a long time. Even the philosopher Plato mentioned it over 2,000 years ago. Today, recycling is a key part of how we try to protect the environment, following the rules of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.”
Many different things can be recycled. Some of these include glass, paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, tires, old clothes, and electronic items. We can also recycle things that break down naturally, like food scraps and garden waste. Composting is an important part of recycling, as it helps turn waste into useful soil.
Recycling starts when we put our recyclable items in special bins. These materials are then collected and taken to a recycling center. At the center, workers sort and clean the items, and then turn them into new materials. These materials can be used to make new products. Sometimes, the materials might not be reused exactly the same way but are instead made into different items because it can be cheaper or easier to do so.
