Many different plants and animals live there, and some can only be found in this rainforest. The rainforest helps our planet by taking in carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen. Sadly, it is in danger because many trees are being cut down for farming and mining. Every year, thousands of trees are removed, which hurts animals and affects the climate. It is very important to protect this special place and all the living things that depend on it.

Many individuals enjoy keeping animals as companions, with dogs and cats being the most common choices. Others prefer birds or goldfish, since these pets require less living space and are generally easier to care for.

When considering a pet, you may purchase one from a pet shop, but it is important to avoid selecting an unhealthy animal. Having some prior knowledge about the species you intend to keep will help you choose wisely. If your budget is limited and you lack experience with animals, you can turn to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

The very first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established in England in 1821, with the mission of ensuring that all animals are treated with compassion. In Hong Kong, the RSPCA continues this mission: its officers rescue abandoned animals from the streets, care for them until they recover, and then make them available for adoption. Visitors to the RSPCA can select pets from these rehabilitated animals, confident that they are healthy. Should your pet later fall ill, the RSPCA’s veterinarians are available to provide treatment.

The Behavior of Plants

People often think that behavior is something only animals exhibit, but plants also display unique behaviors, especially in response to their environment. Plants can react to light, water, touch, and even gravity. These responses are known as tropisms and are crucial for their growth and survival. For example, phototropism is a plant’s response to light. If a plant is in a dark room with only one window, it will lean towards the light source. This movement occurs as the plant optimizes photosynthesis by capturing as much light as possible, essential for energy production.

Thigmotropism is another fascinating behavior in plants, which is their response to touch. Plants like climbing vines use thigmotropism to find support structures. When a vine’s tendrils come into contact with an object, they start to curl around it, allowing the plant to climb. This behavior helps the plant grow towards sunlight, which is usually more accessible at higher levels, and provides additional structural stability.

Hydrotropism, a plant’s response to water, plays a critical role in its survival. Roots naturally grow towards areas with higher moisture levels, allowing the plant to absorb water more efficiently. In drought conditions, some plants adapt by changing their root growth direction, enabling them to reach deeper soil layers where water might still be available. This adaptation is vital for the plant’s hydration and nutrient absorption, especially in arid environments.

Lastly, gravitropism (or geotropism) is a plant’s response to gravity. Roots generally grow downward, anchoring the plant into the soil and helping it access water and minerals, while stems grow upward, ensuring exposure to sunlight. Each of these behaviors allows plants to adapt to their environment and thrive despite challenges.

PhototropismPlants grow towards (66) __________ to produce more energy.
ThigmotropismTendrils curl around an (67) __________ to help the plant climb.
HydrotropismRoots grow towards areas with more (68) __________.

Verse 1Verse 2
I walked along the sandy shore,

With waves that whispered more and more.

Each wave a story, each wave a song,

Of things held deep and strong.

The sea told me of days long past,

Of ships that sailed both slow and fast.

Of treasures lost, of storms that came,

And lives it took without a name.

Verse 3Verse 4
The waves remembered cries and tears,

From sailors lost through all the years.

They spoke of journeys, big and small,

Of secrets held by ocean’s call.

The moon shone down upon the sea,

Showing shadows wild and free.

A sparkle here, a shadow there,

Hints of stories everywhere.

Verse 5Verse 6
The sea breeze whispered close to me,

Of lands unknown, far out at sea.

It called me in, to come and see,

The secrets hidden, wild and free.

The sun went down, the sky grew dark,

And seabirds called from their

distant arc.

In that moment, I felt so small,

Yet part of something big and tall.
